Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Volunteering – Come on By!

Sue Rock Originals Everyone – the Brooklyn based textile charity which supports domestic violence survivors is doing it again.
Come out and put your hands to good use!

We are using volunteers on Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the following THREE WAYS:

1. FLYER DISTRIBUTION – Don’t want to be cooped up inside during this fabulous weather we have been having? Well we need volunteers to assist us in getting the word out about our organization. Volunteers will work in groups and with our information flyers go throughout our neighborhood to distribute flyers at homes, stores, restaurants and businesses.

Hours – 12:00 – 6:00pm
Time requirement – 1 — 2 hours total

2. SEWING FOR SURVIVORS – Want to try your hand at being creative? SROE has an ongoing quilting program which provides quilt tops to New Yorks domestic violence residences. We are looking for skilled textile workers for machine sewing, hand sewing, knitting and crocheting.

And if you’re not feeling crafty – Not to worry! We need textile lovers for the following tasks (and there will be refreshments!):

Folding and sorting of fabric
Cutting of fabric into shapes for quilts
Ironing
Organizing of the work flow.

Hours – Morning Shift: 12:00 – 3:00
Afternoon Shift: 3:15pm – 6:15pm

3. MEDIA PEOPLE : – We always need extra eyes and ears on the ground – if you love being at events and documenting by either blogging or taking pictures we would love to have you!

Hours – 12:00 – 6:00pm
Time requirement – 1 — 2 hours total

A or C trains to Nostrand Avenue – walk up 5 blocks to Bergen street, make a right turn on Bergen Street.
Take the Q train to Prospect Park. Take the Shuttle train to Park Place. Use the right exit and walk out of the train station. Make a right turn and walk two blocks to Rogers Avenue. Make a left turn and walk three blocks (in the direction of traffic) to Bergen St. Turn right on Bergen and we are on the right side close to Rogers Avenue.
LONG ISLAND RAIL ROAD – Nostrand Avenues Stop. Come out of the train and walk straight up Nostrand Avenue 2 blocks to Bergen Street. Make a right turn

The premonitions of 2012 have flooded the press for the past year! What to expect, what to do?

We know that what ever happens we will be prepared with the tools to encourage everyone BACK to reality and to the creativity of the human spirit!

2011 was an interesting year. As the economy continued to take its toll, we received awards from public officials due to our work with Domestic Violence survivors. We also maintained success with our volunteers creating quilts for the Center Against Domestic Violence residence, and new volunteers making sanitary products for DAYS for GIRLS organization.

We all look forward to making 2012 our best year ever. Hard to say that after eight years of stunning participation but we are looking forward to it!

This year, we thought about our successes and our challenges and ways that we wanted to interact with our friends and supporters as well as the women using our services.

First of all we are going to share some of the secrets to getting YOUR non profit ideas off the ground. People are in need throughout this country and your efforts to help can make a big difference – but where to begin?

We also look forward to sharing classes in sewing, knitting, crocheting and more through YOUTUBE,

Its time also for you to meet the variety of people who make our organization work. Our donors will be featured on our blog. These men and women who have donated their resources to us (or their children) are the lifeblood of our organization. Their stories are profound and speak to a universal love of textiles. This textile and needleart knowledge transcends culture and resounds in us all!

Weekly Sewing Circle Becomes a HIT!

Each year our volunteers receive the raw materials to create NEW clothing and accessories women living in temporary housing need. Women leaving the cycle of violence often leave with the clothes on their back. Volunteers create handknit and hand crocheted apparel, home decor and what’s more – a sense of hope!

Sue Rock Originals Everyone will be helping out a Day for Girls sewing event sponsored by Bust Magazine and held at Otto’s Shrunken Head this past weekend!

Seven yards of fabric will become bags for reusable feminine products being compiled for the Days for Girls Organization.

Days for Girls is a nonprofit organization providing washable feminine hygiene kits for women who would otherwise go without. Currently serving in 15 nations and growing.Volunteers around the globe craft washable feminine hygiene kits. Recent expansions include setting up microenterprises in communities enabling women to make kits for their community.

Amazing things happen for those who wait…… you all know of the phenomenal turnout of volunteers for our Sewing for Haiti Event during Martin Luther King Day, 2010.

Well through a connection (made in heaven!), we are currently working with celebrity manicurist Myrdith Leon McCormick and Founding Director of United Initiatives for Peace, Diesa Eléonore Seidel to get volunteer created clothing to the girls attending BEL KAN and their families!

Sue Rock presented Women of Valor Award by Senator John L. Sampson

On Thursday May 12, I was awarded the Women of Valor Award by Senator John L. Samson. For the past four years, Senator Samson has commended women for their role in uplifting the community. The awards are given in a variety of categories from Health and Human Services, to Education, to Leadership.

I was given the EXCELLENCE IN SERVICE award for my role as Executive Director and Founder of Sue Rock Originals Everyone! All of the Women of Valor received Citations of Honor from their City Councilperson.

As you can see the meeting room in Brooklyn College’s Student Union was filled to the brim with attendees, political figures, family and well wishers.

As the program progressed, I was overcome with being presented with such an honor. Each woman spoke eloquently about their fulfillment with their responsibility in their community…..each story spoke so closely to my own.

Women spurring their children, and husbands and community leaders on to further efforts of improvement and enhanced self worth. We all agreed that we could accomplish SO much more with funding (LOL) however we affirmed that regardless – the work we did our communities was our passion and would continue even stronger!

What an amazing evening )

Participates in

Brooklyn’s “Her-Story” Celebration

Brooklyn, March 20, 2011 – Center Against Domestic Violence, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz’s office and Sue Rock Originals are teaming up to mark Women in History month at 12 noon on March 24 following Borough Hall’s Women in History Celebration.

The quilts were created by volunteers at Sue Rock Originals studio in Brooklyn on the third annual Martin Luther King Day of Service. At this Brooklyn event, 100 volunteers created quilts and afghans to present to the women who found safety in Center Against Domestic Violence historic Brooklyn shelters. When Women’s Survival Space opened its doors, it was New York State’s first emergency shelter for battered women and their children. Borough President Markowitz will celebrate women in history immediately preceding the quilt presentation ceremony by honoring exceptional Brooklyn women.

Founded in 1977, The Center opened the first publicly-funded domestic violence shelter in New York State. Since then, CADV’s outreach has expanded to include three full-service shelters for victims and their children, innovative education programs that reach more than 30,000 students each year, plus a variety of programs that support victims and raise awareness throughout the community. Textile Based Non Profit Presents Handcrafted Quilts To The Center Against Domestic Violence at Brooklyn Borough Hall Women’s Herstory Commemoration

In conjunction with Borough Hall’s Women’s Herstory Month commemoration – two FIRSTS come together in the spirit of women’s survival. Sue Rock Originals Everyone, Inc., the first textile based domestic violence organization, will present 50 volunteer crafted quilts to the Center Against Domestic Violence – the first organization to rally for domestic violence shelters in 1976. This historic presentation is being held on Thursday, March 24, 2011 at Borough Hall, Brooklyn, New York 12:00pm

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, February 21, 2011 over 200 people came together at the design studio of Sue Rock Originals Everyone to create quilts using fabrics donated by the Van Heusen corporation. Volunteers of every age and nationality tirelessly worked together to create beautiful quilt tops for the residences run by the Center Against Domestic Violence.

Sue Rock Originals Everyone, Inc is the internationally acclaimed textile charity committed to supporting the lives of survivors of domestic violence. With such a small percentage of women leaving domestic violence situations nationwide, we felt it was important to provide direct support to these women who have made the courageous first steps towards change. For seven years we have had the encouragement of the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office in supporting the lives of women and Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz has coined our work “Handcrafted Healing”. Using discarded fabrics from companies such as Liz Claiborne, Jones NY , Marc Jacobs and Van Heusen – as well as interior design companies like Kravet and Sina Pearson, we train our communities in all aspects of the textiles arts.
