Repairing lives……one stitch at a time…….

So the time has finally come –
You run out while doing laundry, pick up the Duane Reade bag with all of your important documents from your friend’s car and tearfully never look back……

plastic bagTwo months later, in a safe house –  you look at this tattered Duane Reade bag that now is barely able to hold your most important documents
and think.. is this what my life has become?

This is the situation for so many people who leave the domestic violence in their homes.  Studies report that it takes a person SEVEN times before they make the final step to leave everything familiar in order to start a new life.  Some people have prepared for months, waiting for just the right opportunity.  When that opportunity comes, many have only the clothing they are wearing.  When a domestic violence survivor leaves their abuser, their danger increases tenfold.

Domestic Violence shelters, residences and safe houses are wonderful resources, but what happens in the months after settling in?  After all the appointments are made and the identification is changed, what has happens to this person’s quality of life?

This is where Sue Rock Originals Everyone steps in.
We teach how to create a quality of life that a woman may have only imagined.
And we show how to do it with her own hands!

Imagine…..with the skills, some yarn and a few rides on the subway, you can knit or crochet a beautiful bag that will last up to 10 years?

By teaching these skills – carefully and consistently, we have seen survivors of domestic violence gain a sense of hope about their future.  It is as if each choice of color or fabric, re-establishes the choices they made to leave.  Each stitch sewn creates a step into a brand new future!

So just what CAN domestic violence victims do?

Time and again – in the press and in public conversations, the topic of domestic violence is in our living rooms. Without personal knowledge of the realities – people often ask “Why don’t they just leave?” This, as we know is a farce. Even in the best situation with a wonderful relationship and opportunities in abundance, a person can rarely just leave their home….

One of the most difficult experiences is coming to terms with the reality of bad relationship gone horrible wrong. According to the New York State Coalition of Domestic Violence:

  • Domestic violence is a pattern of coercive behavior/tactics that is culturally learned, socially condoned, and is perpetrated by one person against their intimate partner. Types of abuse can include physical, sexual, psychological, and economic abuse. Domestic violence can also be perpetrated by and/or against a member of the same family or household.
  • Domestic violence is not limited to specific groups based on race, socioeconomic status, gender identity, sex, sexual orientation, ethnicity, age, religious affiliation, or social location, but rather is perpetrated by abusers from all social groups.

Becoming aware that you are in a relationship of this type can be frightening. Men and women each have to come to their own choices as to what strategy is best for them in their situation.

If you or someone you know is in a domestic violence situation – get help!
Some of the organizations based in New York City we work with are :
Safe Horizon
Center Against Domestic Violence
Sanctuary for Families
The Family Justice Center

AND THIS JUST IN – If you are an American overseas in an abusive situation:
The American Overseas Domestic Violence Crisis Center
Next Month we will look at preparation a domestic violence survivor has to do JUST to get ready for that big step….

HAPPY NEW YEAR – 2015 IS GOING TO BE GREAT!

So excited about 2015 – this marks our tenth year since the idea of creating an organization to help women who are survivors of domestic violence.

2015 will mean greater outreach. In the Fall of 2013, we had the wonderful opportunity to meet the Deputy Director of Domestic Violence for New York City, Marie Philip. Director Philip endorses the work of Sue Rock Originals Everyone and we will be working with all of the domestic violence shelters in the New York City area.

Tips on Reinvention – Coaching from Founder Sue Rock!

When Marlo Thomas heard the story of the woman who taught domestic violence survivors how to sew she simply had to include them in her new book “It Ain’t Over”

Sue Rock Originals is the domestic violence charity whose unique vision has helped women across the globe.  “We provide domestic violence survivors with the skills and resources to repair their lives”  Using fabric donations from the garment industry,  women are taught how to make their own clothing and home furnishings.   Marlo was taken by the generosity and kindness of this organization and chose to include them.  Their story is the first in the chapter titled RELENTLESS, something our work truly is.

She also hosted a webinar on April 29  in the first ever National Reinvention Day.  It was a blast being on the webcast with other contributors to her book and speaking with women from around the country.  It was during this webcast that I really understood WHY Marlo had to do this book.  Women throughout the world are seeking insight as to how to reinvent their lives and bring in more joy, money, time and most of all satisfaction for themselves and their families.

Now is the best time to connect to mentors and teachers to gain the insight on how to reinvent yourself and bring a freshness and newness into your life. I am offering free introductory coaching sessions to men and women who want to go past the book and really get the tips and techniques to develop a new and exciting life!

Contact Sue Rock at suerockoriginals@yahoo.com and get your free 30 minute coaching session on How to Reinvent Yourself from Where You Are Right Now!

Creativity is endless – when it’s in your own hands……. – Sue Rock Inspirations

When I was growing up in Brooklyn, New York, back in the 70’s – there were a ton of women’s magazines.  And the interesting thing about those magazines  – they offered more than “How to lose weight”,”how to save money” and “How to save time”.

Magazines like Ladies Home Journal Needle & Craft, Women’s Day Needle & Craft and Family Circle would provide its readership the latest fashion and home decor styling of the day.  Current to trend – the magazines were filled with design ideas – the entire second half of the magazine being the instructions for all of it. Need a pattern for a dress – no problem when you can translate graph paper designs to brown paper.

People were encouraged to “make it yourself”.  It is these magazines that gave me the spark to believe that women could make their own lives if raw materials were provided for them.

Looking at just one home accessory – Throw pillows.   Take a quick glance online and throw pillows can cost anywhere from $28 to $75.  I know if I was starting from scratch, throw pillows would the LAST thing on my list!

But look at the wide variety of pillows you can create yourself!  GORGEOUS! This is why Sue Rock Originals pushes the envelope, encouraging women to believe that many many things are possible (and have been possible for quite a while…..:)

What would you most like to have if you were starting over that you think is impossible?  You might be surprised!

Reinvention in REAL time!

Having the opportunity to speak with MARLO THOMAS and some of the women who are in her new book “It Ain’t Over” was remarkable.  People from all over the country took  the time to share their questions with Marlo and her guests online.

The purpose of Sue Rock Originals Everyone is to support survivors of domestic violence who leave.  These remarkable people are making the first steps towards “reinvention” – what does a peaceful life feel like?  How do I start again? Where will I live?  Where will my children go to school?

One of the ways that we support these women is by providing them creative nourishment. We take the time to encourage them to rediscover their loves and their interests – gently and patiently.   We discuss ways of replacing the items left behind in the search for a new life.  Each choice made restores their faith in themselves.

If you would like to participate in the Sue Rock Originals experience – leave a comment below or contact us at suerockoriginals@yahoo.com
